Joint Symposium on Photonics in Cancer Detection and Therapy

It is our pleasure to solicit your involvement in an exciting Joint Symposium on Photonics in Cancer Detection and Therapy at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe) and the European Quantum Electronics Conference (EQEC) 2017 in Munich, Germany from 25 – 29 June, 2017.

We have two leading invited speakers to provide state-of-the-art summaries of this work in both diagnostic and therapeutic use of photonics for cancers: Prof. Jürgen Popp from Leibniz-IPHT, Jena and Dr. Jörg Pawelke from OncoRay, Dresden.

CLEO/Europe-EQEC is an exceptional conference with tremendous technical coverage, and thus we sincerely hope that you will be able to contribute.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,

Katia Parodi (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München)
Nick Stone (University of Exeter)

We are pleased to announce bursaries for UK Early Career Researchers towards the cost of attending the SPEC 2016 Conference in Montreal, Canada, June 26-30, 2016.

Through our EPSRC funding we are able to offer 10 bursaries for UK Early Career Researchers; PhD student, postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) or equivalent. Researchers with a permanent independent position are not eligible to apply.

Each grant will consist of the registration fee and £700 towards conference costs, airfare, ground transportation, hotel, meals etc.

Interested parties should email  with their submitted abstract and a cover letter stating the benefit to them, and their future career, of attending SPEC 2016.

PDRA in micro-Raman and fluorescence of soil microbiology

A 18-months (12-months and possible 6-months extension) postdoctoral fellow in the field of spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy is available in the LIEC-Aiguillettes Laboratory at Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, France (, under the supervision of Dr. Aurélie Cébron.

The successful candidate will conduct ANR-funded research (Rhizorg project) on the analysis/visualization of bacterial pure cultures and soil samples using fluorescence microscopy (bacterial cell-labelling using Fluorescence in situ hybridization: FISH technique) combined with FT-Raman spectroscopy. Raman microspectroscopy has the potential to monitor and identify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and/or PAH-degrading bacteria using 13C-labelled Phenanthrene. Cell labelling (FISH) and analysis of Raman spectral profiles will constitute the core research of the PostDoctoral position.

PhD – University of Reims Champagne Ardenne

We are planning to apply for half-funding for a doctoral contract with our university (University of Reims Champagne Ardenne). We are looking for an opportunity to supplement financing from a partner interested in a joint PhD. The topic of the project would concern processing of vibrational data collected on tissue sections (unsupervised feature selection and clustering, multi-objective optimization for spectral histology).
