Previously he was employed for 34 years in the chemical industry involved with vibrational spectroscopy technique application, research and development. Subsequent to this, John held a research position in the School of Chemistry of the University of Nottingham, where he was associated with biochemical applications studies using infrared spectroscopy aimed at diagnosis of cancerous tissue and cells.

John was a member of the EU-funded DASIM project network, is a past chair (9 years) of the UK Infrared and Raman Discussion Group, and has also served as president of Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
